Was ist Lehrkunst?

Welche methodischen Ideen stecken dahinter?

Introducing The Art of Teaching

Which time is the most exciting during a school lesson? Clearly when everybody is puzzling about a problem. A riddle not from the teen magazine or from the puzzle app on my cellphone, but one from our everyday reality. For instance a burning candle: What happens if I light it up? The answer is not a solution word to find (it burns!) but the task is to really understand the whole matter. So this first question opens up an extensive research path. For the pupils are now allowed to inquire about every detail they have not quite understood yet: How does it work? Research based learning for a long time with astounding experiments, which is best done in the footsteps of former researchers and teachers who have already gone this path. In the case of the candle, for example, the famous chemist Michael Faraday from the 19th century. Following him we can learn at the same time how he has learned and researched (very much as an autodidact!) and how he passed on what he had then understood (in lectures for young people and laymen). This is how we are learning about the history of science in the same move – and about the Art of Teaching (Lehrkunst). A way of teaching that makes the school lessons exciting.

What is the Art of Teaching?

Lehrkunst didactics means teaching mainly in the form of staging lessons (Lehrstück). Staging lessons are well composed medium length teaching units that are repeatedly tested, always varied and constantly developed. They treat “decisive moments in history” (Sternstunden der Menschheit) or cross-epochal human issues. In staging lessons pupils are asked to reenact the ways on which scientist or headliners of culture have won new insights at their time and made pioneering discoveries. Lehrkunst didactics concentrate on condencing learning processes in school into educational processes, and the aesthetic dimension of staging lessons is also central.
Lehrkunst follows a historical tradition starting with Comenius' "Didactica Magna" and leading via Diesterweg, Willmann and Reichwein to the true father of Lehrkunst didactics, to Martin Wagenschein. Over the past twenty years, the art of teaching has greatly developed  under the auspices of Hans Christoph Berg with the help of Wolfgang Klafki and Theodor Schulze. Today, it is widespread and practiced at upper grade elementary schools up to upper secondary schools. In doing so, it does not claim to cover all the topics and areas of instruction – it considers itself as a "ten per cent didactics".

What are the methodological ideas of Lehrkunst didactics?

The methodological center of Lehrkunst is the triad of the exemplary, the genetic and the dramaturgical principles.

- Teaching staging lessons focuses on cultural and curricularly important "key topics" (exemplary principle).
- It is based on cultural examples, on the original sources: (genetic principle): authors, researchers, explorers, poets, philosophers, musicians and visual artists such as Pythagoras and Pascal, Aesop and Aristotle, Linné and La Fontaine, Bach and Brecht, Merian and Molière, Faraday and Fabre, Sachs and Schnitzler, whose experience in solving a complex problem is collected and evaluated by Lehrkunst didactics, - to transform them into a lively, coherent learning task for today's young people, into staging lessons which include the models and hints from the classics of pedagogics (dramaturgical principle).

The free and institutionally supported cooperation among colleagues and non-school advisors in so called Lehrkunst workshops has also proved successful in setting up a collection of exemplary staging lessons.

What is the mission statement?

The power and the essence of the tree has condensed in the nut, and a new tree grows again out of the nut. Similarly, Lehrkunst didactics offers exemplary staging lessons in which the forces of great cultural traditions have been condensed – "all in a nutshell" – and which can now grow into new, living characters in the life of the new generation.
